Customise your own alloy wheels for your off-road build
A good set of wheels isn’t just about colour. It starts with the right dimensions. Particularly with a 4×4 or off-road build, the wheels must be compatible with the tyres, axles, brakes, wheel arches and the vehicle’s intended use. Only then does the finish come into play.
At Lensen Products, you can fully customise your CNC-forged beadlocks. This means you can choose your own models, sizes, ET values, J values, colours, rings, bolts and hub caps.

Start with the car’s purpose
Before you choose a custom wheel, it’s a good idea to be clear about what the car is being built for. A trail car, challenge car, overlander or show car doesn’t always call for the same choices.
First, ask yourself a few practical questions:
- What tyre size do you want to use?
- How much space do you have in the wheel arches?
- Have the axles, brakes or suspension been modified?
- Should a car be primarily functional, visually striking, or both?
- Do you want to take a broad approach, or would you prefer to stay within certain limits?
With that information, it becomes much easier to determine the correct wheel specifications.
Inch size: suitable for the tyre and application
The inch size determines which tyre fits the rim. Off-road builds often feature larger tyres and sturdy sidewalls. The right combination of rim diameter and tyre height is important for grip, handling and appearance.
A rim that’s too big with too little tyre sidewall might look cool, but it isn’t always practical off-road. A higher sidewall often provides greater comfort and better resistance to deformation at low tyre pressure. That’s precisely why many off-road riders deliberately opt for a set-up that makes technical sense, rather than just for the look of it.
J-value: the width of the rim
The J-value indicates the width of the rim. This width must be compatible with the tyre you wish to fit. A wide tyre requires a rim of the appropriate width, so that the tyre sits properly on the rim and the sidewall functions correctly.
This is particularly important with custom beadlocks. You want the tyre to grip securely, fit neatly and remain functional under load. The combination of tyre, rim width and beadlock ring is particularly important when driving with lower tyre pressure.
ET value: how far does the rim protrude outwards?
The ET value determines the position of the rim in relation to the wheel hub. A different ET value can cause your track width to change and the rim to be positioned further outwards or inwards.
This affects:
- the car’s appearance
- play in the brakes and suspension
- space in the wheel arch
- steering angle
- load on the suspension and bearings
That’s why the ET value isn’t something you choose on a whim. With bespoke wheels, this is actually one of the key factors in ensuring the set fits your car perfectly.
Beadlock ring, bolts and hub cap
Once the technical foundations are in place, the fun part begins: the finishing touches.
With Lensen Products’ CNC Forged Beadlocks, you can choose the colour of the rim, the colour of the ring and the colour of the bolts, amongst other things. You can also choose between an aluminium or plastic hub cap.
This allows you to match the rim to the rest of the build. For example:
- black rim with a contrasting ring
- colour accents that feature on the cage, bumper or chassis
- a subtle finish for a sleek look
- eye-catching ring for a show build
- bolt colour as an extra detail
It is precisely those details that set custom wheels apart from a standard set.
Sturdy material for heavy-duty use
Lensen Products CNC-forged beadlocks are CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminium. This material is known for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio. The rims have a standard load capacity of 1080 kg per rim.
That makes them suitable for a wide range of projects. Not just for cars that need to look good at a meet-up, but also for builds that are actually going off-road.
Make sure your set complements the rest of your build
A custom wheel is never separate from the rest of the car. Tyres, axles, suspension, brakes and bodywork all work together to determine what makes sense. That’s why it’s wise not to choose your wheel set based on appearance alone.
Do you already have a complete set-up in mind? If so, please share the tyre size, vehicle details and your preferred look. That way, we can offer tailored advice on size, ET value, J-value and finish.
