In standard on-road use, the original cooling system of most 4\u00d74s is more than adequate. But as soon as conditions become more severe, due to low driving speeds off-road, high outdoor temperatures, increased engine power or prolonged towing with a trailer, the cooling system becomes the limiting factor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many modified 4\u00d74s, a cooling upgrade is not an optional luxury but a necessary step to ensure engine reliability and longevity. In this article, we explain how the cooling system works, when an upgrade is needed and what options are available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does the cooling system of a 4\u00d74 work?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cooling system of an internal combustion engine is responsible for dissipating the heat released during combustion, keeping the engine operating within its optimum temperature range. Coolant circulates through the engine block and cylinder head, absorbing heat and transporting it to the radiator. In the radiator, the fluid cools by air flowing past the fins, after which the cooled fluid returns to the engine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In turbo engines, the intercooler also plays a crucial role. The turbo compresses incoming air, which greatly increases the air temperature. Hot air is less dense and contains less oxygen per volume, which lowers combustion efficiency. The intercooler cools the compressed air before it enters the cylinders, providing higher charge air efficiency and more power at lower temperatures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When is a cooling upgrade necessary?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>At low driving speeds off-road<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the road, the driving wind provides much of the airflow through the radiator. As soon as you drive slowly through technical terrain, at driving speeds of 5 to 20 kilometres per hour, this driving wind is largely lost. Cooling is then entirely dependent on the cooling fan. With an original viscous or electric fan, this may be insufficient to keep the engine temperature stable at high outside temperatures or heavy engine load.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A larger or more efficient radiator with more cooling capacity compensates for the loss of driving wind and keeps the engine temperature stable, even at low speed in heavy terrain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>After chiptuning or engine modifications<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boosted engine produces more power but also more heat. The original radiator is tuned for the engine's standard power and heat production. Once the power output increases significantly due to chiptuning or other modifications, the original radiator can no longer dissipate the extra heat adequately. This leads to higher operating temperatures that shorten engine life and, at extremes, lead to overheating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In turbocharged engines that are boosted, an intercooler upgrade is also almost always necessary. A larger intercooler cools the charge air more efficiently, which improves charge air efficiency and reduces the risk of knocking or thermal failure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When towing a trailer or heavy load for long periods of time<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Towing with a trailer or carrying heavy cargo significantly increases the engine load. The engine works harder, produces more heat and needs more cooling capacity. For expedition and overland vehicles that regularly carry heavy loads or tow a trailer, a cooling upgrade directly improves reliability on long trips in hot weather.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What cooling upgrades are there?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Aluminium radiator<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An aluminium radiator is the most impactful cooling upgrade for most 4\u00d74s. Aluminium has better thermal conductivity than the plastic and copper used in original radiators, and a larger-diameter aluminium core offers significantly more cooling surface area. A high-quality aluminium radiator cools the engine back to optimum operating temperature faster and keeps that temperature more stable under heavy load.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aluminium radiators are available in single, double and triple core versions. A double core typically offers 30 to 50 per cent more cooling capacity than the original single core, which is more than sufficient for most off-road and performance applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Intercooler upgrade<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For turbo engines, an intercooler upgrade is the direct complement to a chiptuning or turbo upgrade. A larger or more efficient intercooler reduces charge air temperature, which improves combustion efficiency and increases engine power. Moreover, a lower charge air temperature reduces the risk of knocking, which improves the life of pistons and cylinders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intercoolers are available as air-air versions, where the charge air is cooled by the driving wind, and air-water versions, where water is used as the cooling medium. For most 4\u00d74 and off-road applications, an air-to-air intercooler is the most common and low-maintenance choice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cooling fan and viscous coupling<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An inefficient cooling fan or a worn viscous coupling significantly reduces airflow through the radiator at low speed. This is an often underestimated cause of overheating in the field. Upgrading to a higher capacity electric cooling fan or replacing a worn viscous coupling can significantly improve cooling efficiency without replacing the radiator itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric fans offer the advantage of being able to run at full capacity independently of engine speed, even at idle speed. Outdated or contaminated coolant reduces heat transfer and can cause corrosion in the system. Change the coolant at the manufacturer's recommended intervals and always use the correct coolant for your engine type.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After every major off-road ride, check the condition of the cooling hoses for cracks or hardening, the condition of the radiator cap and the coolant level. A small leak that is not noticeable on the road can lead to a rapidly falling coolant level and overheating off-road at high loads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Combine cooling with other upgrades<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cooling upgrade works best as part of a thoughtful overall upgrade. In a chiptuning or engine modification, a radiator and intercooler upgrade is a logical and necessary addition.
